The ACE Curatorial Collective invites you to join us for the two-day exhibition Play it Again, in conjunction with Hunter’s Master of Fine Arts Fall Open Studios. Play it Again brings together 27 artists including current Hunter MFAs to explore contemporary relationships to the past distinct from critical appropriation strategies of the 20th century. The works on view revisit, rehearse, re-photograph, re-draw, and reenact histories and art historic modes in often playful and sometimes surprisingly humorous ways.

The window as a display space maintains its allure by presenting many paradoxes: with its receding space it invites entrance, yet its flatness, and inaccessibility make this impossible. As a site of commerce it exists to present finished objects of production for consumption, and yet the shadow of remove imparted by the glass inspires feelings of unfulfilled desire– the viewer is asked to imagine themselves in relation to the object, wherein the fully rendered commodity is unfinished until held, worn, and purchased. In the spirit of the storefront window interstice, ACE has invited artists whose work considers process, questions completion and hinges upon contingency to activate the Hunter Leubsdorf Gallery Windows.

HxWxDxTx2 will consist of two projects which display the making of objects and actions in process, where the characteristics of the window are subverted. Here, the incompletion of the object is revealed and presented, rather than hidden behind the polish of the highly designed window set. Moreover, the inhabitable potential of the space is emphasized, and yet entrance into this platform-cum-construction site is more discouraged in the viewer. Each project will take place over the course of two weeks, during which the artists will work on their respective installations at intervals, framing artistic practice as a product, and imparting a confounding sense of voyeurism upon the viewer.

Tuning Baghdad with Regine Basha with Che Chen

Cassettes, video clips, books, discussion. Is there such a thing as musical citizenship? How do you draw the lines between ethnicity, citizenship, nationality and religion in music? Regine Basha will share music and video clips from Iraqi Jewish musicians who are versed in the Maqam tradition of Iraq in the 1940s and now play amongst themselves in privacy in Israel.

Mysterious Communion with Nancy Brown/Candles of Paradise

Together we will build a simple instrument and discuss basic composition. Each pupil will then contribute their part to a preexisting musical template and record it for all time. These recordings will be compiled for a complete picture of the collective experience,each pupil with their vision represented. Through the lens of an elementary school music class, sociospiritual communion is experienced.

My first memory of poetry takes place around the kitchen table in the house where my parents still live. It might be 1988. My mother picks a page from The Poetry of Robert Frost, studies it, then presses record on a cassette deck and begins to read aloud.

In the U.S. we are now routinely asked to watch each other and to report not only illegal or criminal activities but any putatively “suspicious behavior;” but what might become of us and our idea of public space and private rights as we monitor each other, policing our differences, overwriting curiosity or care with distrust?

This tutorial will consider the advent of the citizen as a proxy for state surveillance, and we will look at public safety posters, p.s. announcements, and media reports on citizens and homeland security in order to better understand how and why the public is being asked to police people and identify outsiders. We will continue to contend with these questions while viewing web based live video from surveillance cameras on the U.S. southern border where citizens are encouraged to login, watch, and report suspicious border traffic to Texas authorities while still online. Border barricades and walls are grossly ineffective blocks on smuggling or ‘illegal’ migration, but they nonetheless serve as powerful symbols, and the call for citizens to police them is itself a spectacle worth attending to: What new forms of citizenship are born when security and purity become primary values of the state.

Both art history and curatorial studies are analyzed through a semi-installed “revenge” themed exhibition and a projected video organized in the spirit of a tele-course lecture. A voice over delivered by Dr. Christopher Parr, a religious studies professor at Webster University articulates a text written by one of the accusers of the Wikileaks founder Julian Assange.  The presentation in the video explores the theme of crime, vengeance and vandalism through images from popular culture, art history, cinema, and memorable moments in photojournalism all depicting both famous and infamous acts of revenge. This combination is a play on themed research, convoluted art lectures, ambitious curatorial endeavors, and exhibition design that is both humorous and uncanny.

In its current state, Isolation Room/Gallery Kit in St. Louis is a box built at 7’ x 7’x 9’  that occupies the curators’ dining room plus a carefully selected drawing, painting or sculpture. The Gallery Kit ideally can be built in any existing interior space at minimal “DIY’ cost. The gallery kit re-imagines the ideal integration between art and life, public and private. This evolving project focuses on one artwork per exhibition cycle having each piece placed in a physical state of quarantine, situated in a modular viewing space inviting an extended period of contemplation. Building on an ongoing interest in containment, the constructed room allows for the smallest possible collaboration between the gallery space, curator, artist and audience. At its core one work stands in isolation providing an opportunity to protect work from a forced theme, loose contextualization or commercial exploitation. By placing the individual piece as a subject in isolation the work is then encouraged to exist and be perceived from an aesthetic standpoint.

Fruit. Spore. Meat. Animal. Mineral. Plant. Our Civilization eats to survive. It eats a lot. What does eating have to do with Citizenship? What does Citizenship have to do with eating? Athena Kokoronis offers a tutorial where conversation and eating will further inform our relationship to our role as citizens.

Trials With an Overhead View

In this tutorial, we will generate a collective, distributed performance through individual sessions in which participants’ occupations, labor histories, skills and fundamental concerns become material for short choreographed sequences of movement and text.The generated sequences will be simultaneously activated at Twilight, AstronomicalTime 9.28p.m (Saturday) 9.26p.m (Sunday) throughout NYC. A representation of the visible stars over Governor’s Island overlaid upon a map of the boroughs of NY with markings for the chosen or probable locations of performers will estimate an overall constellation of the ephemeral and scattered event. The performance is partly based on depictions of citizenship and monumentality as traced through historical sources including JW Hansen’s Hoover Dam memorial, the living photographs of Arthur Mole,and the choreography of Busby Berkeley.

What defines the [multiplicity] is the AND, as something which has its place between the elements or between the sets. AND, AND, AND— stammering. —Gilles Deleuze

In this tutorial, participants who have never had to naturalize into the United States will rehearse the process of becoming a citizen through an interview format. Those who have gone through a process of naturalization will have the option to relinquish their citizenship. Within the span of a conversation-interview, participants will help problematize the notion of allegiance and the structure of authority and power implicit in the state. Finally, this tutorial will help to underscore the ideal of responsibility to community and place, while also considering different forms of belonging through the concept of ‘nomadic citizenship.’

Accounting in a Solidarity Economy

Drop in for a 15-30 minute introduction to accounting where people matter more than profits. Working with Michael Johnson, a representative from Solidarity NYC, participants will identify economic activities outside of regular paid work, articulating diverse economies by sharing stories and mapping paid/unpaid labor, market/non-market transactions, private/common property, and private/state infrastructure. This is an exercise in consciousness raising around work, consumption, and value.

Working with the Police/Working with the Polis

The word police derives from a Greek word, politeia, meaning a citizenship which is involved with civil polity. The action of policing has been intimately connected with localization, naturalization and the definition of what is natural or civil within a given political zone (or precinct). So where, really, is the line between the police and the population? When are we policing, and when are we being policed, and what do these actions contribute to a sense of place which reflects the natural expressions of its citizens?

What Does Recognition Look Like

With the collapse of the economy, overpriced tuition and lack of jobs it is essential that we innovate alternatives to the traditional accredited university. But are we just interested in education for education’s sake, or do we want to challenge and replace the corporate university? Could someone get a job by just attending an alternative school? How can we create alternative paths for people to receive an education that is formally recognized as legitimate by employers and colleagues? Should we work to abolish accreditation or create alternative ways to accredit? Come discuss the issue of recognition.

Radical Citizenship: The Tutorials- Manhattan

This Friday and Saturday, writers, artists, curators, police, academics,musicians, dancers, and their guests will provide one on one discussions regarding citizenship, radical and otherwise. This is the final iteration of Radical Citizenship; it was previously situated on Governor’s Island (NY), Angel Island and at Southern Exposure in San Francisco.

The tutorials will be held on a series of structures that land somewhere between bench and table; they are made of wood collected from an empty lot in theBrownsville neighborhood of Brooklyn, because it is the site of the New York City’s Teacher’s Strike of 1968. This seven-month strike began when the black community run school board dismissed a dozen primarily Jewish teachers,asserting that these specific teachers were in violation of the union in their resistance to decentralization of the NY school system.

MORE ON THE TEACHER’S STRIKE (1968) BROWNSVILLE, BROOKLYN

In that moment, the Institute for Community Studies, funded by the FordFoundation, articulated in a community newsletter that community control wasa “challenge to the prevalent middle class vision of what education entails” and resisted the notion “that black poor are unteachable in the absence of a drastic reform of their social, cultural, and familial conditions in directions accepted as normal by middle-class whites.” The Teachers Union refuted these claims,perceiving the dismissal as race-biased. A civil rights movement based initiative and a union with radical Jewish activist roots proved irreconcilable. Both parties were aware that as of 1964 there were more than 200 segregated schools in the city, 400% more than 1954. Still, no consensus.

Things were not getting better, in the North, regardless of the united black and Jewish efforts to integrate school systems in the American South. It did not translate. Irit Rogoff deems this current fascination with schooling, amongst artists and academicians, a “pedagogical turn.” To turn towards and away from school and schooling. Does she mean to emphasize the pivot? It doesn’t read as so. But I will: because one can turn both ways, against institution and with it. The Ocean Hill-Brownsville Strike exemplifies the pivot, both parties, radicalized, undone, turning. Not simple, not solved.

about Anhoek instructors:

A B Huber is a writer, teacher, and gleaner of lost theories and abandoned ideas and images. She is an assistant professor at The Gallatin School of Individualized Study at NYU, and in the Fall of 2010 she will be at the University of California Berkeley on a Mellon Fellowship in Critical Theory.

Amanda Eicher lives in Oakland, California and collaborates at home and abroad. She presently teaches at Contra Costa College’s Metas Program, where high school students in Richmond, California and Colima, El Salvador are working together to design public artworks and gestures around violence prevention and personal well-being. Their projects together have included a set of laser-etched doors which will be installed in informal housing in Colima in 2011, and an upcoming garden project titled “What is a smell photograph?” Some of their collaborative work may be seen at metapuentes.wordpress.com.

Athena Kokoronis is a cross-disciplinary performing artist based in NYC whose works are often participatory and mix food and dance, to better understand connections between history, appetite, and movement in society. Her works have been presented in venues including the Judson Church, Socrates Sculpture Park, and her former live-work space, The GWB Ramphouse. In 2009, she co-founded the cross-disciplinary team StrataSpore, a collective platform dedicated to knowledge about mushrooms. Athena choreographed two dances with Strataspore. She is also member of Daria Fain and Robert Kocik’s, Phoneme Choir. In summer, Athena works as a digestion choreographer at Mildred’s Lane, an artist homestead initiated by J. Morgan Puett and Mark Dion.

Carrie Dashow is a New York City based interdisciplinary artist. She uses performance, public space and technology to uncover a truer than true remembrance of the moment you are in right now.

Corrine Fitzpatrick is a poet whose writing appears in numerous print and online journals. Her chapbooks Zamboangueña and On Melody Dispatch were both published in 2007. A recent graduate of Bard College’s MFA program, she lives in Brooklyn.

Huong Ngo was born in Hong Kong, grew up in North Carolina, and currently lives in Brooklyn, NY. She has exhibited at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art,the Aldrich Museum, the Soap Factory, and Yerba Buena Center for the Arts. She has received awards and residencies from the Lower Manhattan Cultural Council, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago,and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs and currently teaches at Parsons the New School for Design, Pratt Institute, and the Museum of Modern Art, NY. Ngo’s deepest desire is for radical aesthetics to invade the classroom, and education to resume its subversive role in the practice of freedom.

Hong-An Truong is an artist and writer based in Brooklyn. Her photographs and videos have been shown at the Godwin-Ternbach Museum in Queens, the ISCP, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Laguna Art Museum, Torrance Art Museum, and DobaeBacsa Gallery in Seoul. Recent group shows include Art in General, the BRIC Rotunda Gallery, and a screening at DeSoto Gallery in Los Angeles. She recently mounted a public audio and video installation in Long Island City called Rehearsal for Education, made in collaboration with students at LaGuardia Community College. Currently her work can be seen in the group show Perspectives 2010 at the International Center for Photography. She is the recipient of a 2010 BRIC Media Arts Fellowship. Truong received her MFA at the University of California, Irvine and was a studio fellow in the Whitney Independent Study Program.

Lt Mark Gagan: I was born in San Francisco and graduated from St. Mary’s College. After college, I worked as a counselor for four years at St. Vincent’s Home for Boys. I became a Richmond Police Officerin 1994 and am now a Lieutenant. I am most proud of the work I did as the supervisor of the DomesticViolence / Child Abuse Unit. I ran the SWAT Team for 10 years and am now responsible for PublicInformation / Media Relations. I am married to an amazing woman, Christy, and have two incredible children, Maria and Kieran. My third child is due December 19th.

Nancy Brown is a gospel singer. She has worked with troubled youth in the wilderness, helped restore pipe organs, and struggled as a stand-up comedian. She performs her own songs in Candles of Paradise. She has a special love for plants and animals.

Regine Basha is a curator and writer currently based in Brooklyn who has worked nationally andinternationally for the past 17 years. As a curator, Basha uses various formats in disseminating art and ideas including exhibition, radio, live presentation, temporal interventions, virtual and print media. She has presented projects in Istanbul, Cairo, Berlin, Santiago, Mexico City and cities across the US. about the creators of Revenge 101:

Daniel McGrath is an adjunct professor in the art department at Webster University in St. Louis. In 2005, he received his Master of Arts from Kings College – University of London. In 2000, he earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts from UCLA. He was co-director of SweetboyProjects in Los Angeles and has organized exhibitions in St. Louis and the United Kingdom. He is a contributing art writer for Art US, Review Magazine and St. Louis Magazine. He lives and works between St. Louis and Oxford, United Kingdom.

Dana Turkovic is an adjunct curator at Laumeier Sculpture Park and a professor in the art department at Webster University. She received her Master of Arts from Goldsmiths College – University of London in curatorial studies. She has organized exhibitions in Los Angeles at Monte Vista Projects in alternative spaces in London and Oxford in the United Kingdom and in St. Louis at the Contemporary Art Museum, Boots Contemporary Art Space, and White Flag Projects. She lives and works in St. Louis, Missouri.

about STUDIO_CUBE:

For November 19th and 20th Open Studios ACE Curatorial Collective has proposed STUDIO_CUBE.

What is ACE Curatorial Collective?

We are small group of MFA and MA students who come together to put on short-run experimental exhibitions in the galleries at Hunter.

Who are you guys?

This semester’s roster of ACE members are Danyel Ferrari, Sophia Lucas, Cate Alsop, Valentina Spalten, Ross McDonnell, and Nickolas Roudane.

What is STUDIO_CUBE and where will it be?

Inspired in part by Brian O’Doherty’s book, Studio and Cube, and the development of crossover spaces such as Recess Project Space. STUDIO_CUBE will be an open call exhibition for Hunter MFA’s that focuses on objects, texts, drawings and other works and supporting materials that the artist may not otherwise think about putting on display but consider essential to their practice: books, scribbles, sketchbooks, records, poetry, found objects. It’s wide open.

What we envision:

The idea is to casually install these works, anonymously if you choose, in a designated 4th floor crit space. There will be comfortable seating and visitors who come for Open Studios to see into another dimension of studio practice, usually edited out of more formal presentations.
