STUDIO_CUBE: Press Release. On View 11/19/10-11/10

Inspired in part by Brian O’Doherty’s book, Studio and Cube, and the development of crossover spaces such as Recess Project Space, STUDIO_CUBE is an open call exhibition for Hunter MFA’s that focuses on objects, texts, drawings and other works and supporting materials that the artist may not otherwise think about putting on display but considers essential to their practice: books, scribbles, sketchbooks, records, poetry, found objects. It’s wide open. The project will be installed in the 4th floor critique space of the MFA building during Open Studios.

In 2007, the Advisory Committee for Exhibitions (ACE) Curatorial Collective formed to expand the dialogue of the Hunter College Art Galleries with short, event-based art projects and installations, while utilizing the transitional periods between regularly scheduled programs. Drawing upon the unique practical, theoretical and curatorial structure of the Hunter College Art Department, ACE joins current MA candidates in Art History and MFA students in Studio Art in a collaborative venture to fully immerse themselves in all facets of curatorial practice. Each project is curated by one MA and one MFA student. Upon review by the Gallery Committee, ACE proposals become part of the Hunter College Art Galleries’ annual programming. ACE works closely with the curatorial staff: Joachim Pissarro (Gallery Director), Tracy L. Adler (Curator), and Jess Gumora (Curatorial Assistant), to develop and realize projects.
Past ACE events organized by the group at the Times Square Gallery include: DisEchoNanace: a sound performance event, Dearraindrop: a sensory installation, and Video Feedback: an evening of experimental films with live musical performances, to name a few. This summer, the ACE Curatorial Collective organized Inequality Reexamined. Summer 2010, a site-specific installation by Mexican artist Abraham Cruzvillegas installed in the street-facing windows of the Leubdsorf Gallery.
2010 – 2011 members: Sophia Lucas, Valentina Spalten, Annie Wischmeyer (MA students) and Danyel Ferrari, Ross McDonnell, Nickolas Roudané (MFA students).
